Amtrak Derailment Impacting Operations in Missouri

BNSF teams are at the scene of a derailment that happened Monday afternoon near Mendon, Missouri, approximately 80 miles northeast of Kansas City. The incident, which occurred on BNSF track, involved an eastbound Amtrak train traveling between Los Angeles and Chicago. Sadly, there were three fatalities as well as multiple others seriously injured. BNSF extends our deepest condolences to those families and loved ones impacted by this accident.

BNSF is working closely with Amtrak, the National Transportation Safety Board, and other officials to investigate this incident. The first main track was restored within 12 hours with speed restrictions in place. An estimate on service restoration of the second main is still pending as teams continue to clear the scene and repair affected track.

With this incident occurring on our Southern Transcon route between Southern California and Chicago, customers with shipments designated to move through this corridor should expect delays until operations have been fully restored.
