Coal Network Update for Friday, September 11, 2026

Date
Sep 11, 2026

Operational Performance
The operation continues to deliver consistent overall service performance across the network. Key metrics improved this week, with car velocity increasing more than 2% versus both the prior week and month. Terminal dwell increased modestly following the holiday weekend but remains historically low. Local service improved over both comparison periods, while the weekly volume moved remained strong at more than 200,000 units.

A Tuesday derailment on Ferromex (FXE) near Zacatecas, Mexico, disrupted a key mainline route, creating congestion and affecting traffic moving through the El Paso and Eagle Pass gateways. While the track reopened early this morning, a significant amount of congestion remains as crews work through the backlog of delayed traffic. BNSF continues to closely coordinate with FXE as recovery efforts progress. Customers moving freight between the U.S. and Mexico should expect delays until traffic flows through the affected gateways begin to normalize next week.

Network Investments and Capacity Enhancements
Across the network, BNSF continues to advance infrastructure improvements that help terminals manage more freight, operate more efficiently and support future growth. At our Galesburg classification (hump) yard near Chicago, the recently completed expansion project contributed to a record day of railcar handling, demonstrating the yard's enhanced ability to sort railcars and build outbound trains more efficiently. In Memphis, work remains ahead of schedule to bring additional receiving and departure track capacity into service, supporting the efficient movement of freight through the terminal.

Service Expectations for the Week Ahead
Most of the network is expected to operate under favorable conditions during the upcoming week. Localized thunderstorm activity is possible in portions of the Plains and Upper Midwest, but no significant network-wide service impacts are anticipated.
