Intermodal Network Update for Friday, August 26, 2022

Date
Aug 26, 2022

BNSF continues to make incremental progress in implementing our aggressive plan to restore service and increase network productivity. While our operating teams continued to battle high winds and flash flooding across the Southwest this week, progress has been made in improving velocity and fluidity across the network.

We remain focused on controlling inventory and aligning resources, such as crew availability, with freight volumes as we prepare for the fall harvest. Our service recovery progress has enabled BNSF to reduce agricultural past dues, and we are now current. We have achieved 60% of our goal to hire 3,000 additional employees, including 1,800 crew personnel and 1,200 new employees on our Engineering, Mechanical and Dispatcher teams.

Regarding the temporary permit embargo in California, our weekly number of permits continues to increase as progress is made in alleviating congestion and reducing backlogs. This week, we increased railcars permitted by 20% for freight moving into California. As reported, when the embargo ends on September 4, we will continue to work collaboratively with individual customers as necessary to manage traffic flows and maintain fluidity. Please refer to our online form to view the current list of commodities exempted from the embargo and obtain additional information.

For much of the BNSF network, no significant service interruptions due to weather are anticipated during the upcoming week. Most locations should experience seasonable conditions for this time of year. With more dry weather in the forecast for the Interior West, along with prolonged drought, we continue to monitor the risk for wildfire activity.

As always, we thank you for your business and appreciate the opportunity to serve as your transportation service provider. We welcome your feedback and questions.
